Disinvestment in the NHS

With constrained National Health Service (NHS) budgets, commissioners are called upon to disinvest, which is the practice of stopping or restricting low-value health care. This research project aimed to: (a) investigate how local decision makers recognise and negotiate opportunities for disinvestment and (b) identify barriers to implementation of disinvestment decisionsLocally, staff within the former Suffolk PCT were interviewed by researchers, who also attended relevant meetings. This research provides initial insights into how disinvestment is experienced by patients and clinicians in practice. Our findings indicate a need for future research into the effectiveness and acceptability of different approaches to implementing disinvestment.
