The Pressure Relieving Support Surfaces for Pressure Ulcer Prevention (Pressure 2) Trial

Pressure 2 was the largest pragmatic trial (with >2000 patients including 139 recruited from NCH&C) comparing of alternating pressure mattresses with high-specification foam mattresses. Results showed no difference in the rate of development of new pressure ulcers between the two mattress type. Researchers conclude that when planning prevention and choosing mattresses, professionals and patients need to consider a number of factors, such as comfort, existing PUs and people’s ability to self-care. The results are published by The Lancet and the full NIHR HTA report on the NIHR library website.
